You need to coordinate!
When you coordinate your kitchen cabinets and floors, the finished design will look cohesive and intentional. The colors, textures, and finishes may not match nor must they. However, the colors, textures, and finishes should complement one another. Here’s what we recommend when selecting cabinetry and flooring.
Start with the Kitchen Floor
The Delmarva Design Center has an impressive selection of beautiful, waterproof, and water-resistant floor-covering products from many high-quality manufacturers. The floor is fundamental to the kitchen design, so first define your flooring. Selecting hardwood flooring versus exotic tiles will make a big difference in matching your kitchen cabinets.
Once the flooring has been defined, you’ll have a clearer idea of which cabinets and countertops to choose.
Select Two or Three Colors (or hues)
While the different components of your kitchen do not need to match, it’s best to stick with two or three colors. Too many different colors will lead to confusion. Even with just two or three colors/hues, your kitchen will look anything but boring.
The key is to choose different shades and textures of the same hue and then opt for one or two contrasting colors. For instance, you might go with ivory cabinets, light oak flooring, a cream-colored backsplash, and brown quartz counters. This combination of colors and textures would look amazing!
Texture and Color
You may also select a single color and add various textures and finishes. For example, you might decide on white-washed hardwood flooring, white painted cabinets with contrasting black knobs. You could complete the look with a white subway tile backsplash and a white marble countertop with dark veining.
Contrast By using Drawer Pulls, Cabinet Knobs, and Fixtures
Perhaps you are thinking about an all-white or all-gray kitchen but worried about it being too plain. You have options by using hardware that will create contrast. The contrasting selection of drawer pulls, cabinet knobs, faucets, exposed hardware, lighting, and other fixtures can create significant contrast and excitement.
If In Doubt – Lean Toward Timeless
Choosing timeless colors will give you the flexibility to change the look of your kitchen down the road without needing another remodel. However, it is not always easy to identify which finishes will hold up throughout the years.
When in doubt, use a base of light-to-medium neutral colors, like white, off-white, beige, and gray. If you’re going to include dark finishes, use them sparingly. For instance, you might go with pale-colored cupboards and counters and choose slate tile floors.
